"Love is Flowers" is a video made in 2001 for the Otakon AMV competition. It won Best Drama there which stirred up a bit of controversy. To this day I still get angry letters claiming that I am a jerk for putting a comedy video into the drama category (although I myself did not choose the category and don't really think of the video as purely comedic).

The audio is Ahmet and Dweezil Zappa's version of ...Baby One More Time, made famous by everyone's favorite redneck Britney Spears. The anime is Shoujo Kakumei Utena, or Revolutionary Girl Utena. Of all the ridiculous fan projects I've worked on, this is by far the most well known and has garnered a small following. Whether or not you'll like it, I don't know, but here it is anyway.

I just noticed Saionji and Anthy have vice versa hair and eye color. Saionji's eyes are purple like Anthy's hair while hers are green like Saionji's hair. Touga is also the red/ darker blue to Utena's pink/lighter blue. Utena is like the lighter hair and eye color of Touga. Aside from having just now picked up on that, the video is hilariously brilliant and well put together. It deserved the win, regardless of category.

But Britney's song is good (I think so, anyway). If you dislike the song itself that's one thing, but if you hate the song because of the artist's character then that's pretty stupid, no offense.

What many people don't know is that this song was originally meant for a male artist. When it's sung by a man, it feels much more sinister. Given how warped and twisted the relationships in this anime are, I think it's entirely appropriate. Far as I can see, the roses are the only comic touch.

People got annoyed about this because they didn't think it was dramatic enough? Sure, it's definitely got some comedy in there, but it's pretty dramatic at the same time. (The fact that it's a pretty accurate portrayal of the relationships in Utena--that is, utterly warped--just helps the drama.)

What, do people think that a male cover of a Britney Spears song can't possibly be taken seriously or something?
