    La poetica furwangleriana è vertiginosa, è l'unico che può permettersi quelle variazioni di tempo senza suscitare reazioni di rigetto. D'altro canto stiamo parlando dell'op. 98 di Johannes Brahms, vale a dire - secondo me - della più alta creazione che la forma sinfonica pura annoveri nella sua storia. E' chiaro? La più alta sinfonia di tutti i tempi. Brahms, riprendendo Bach, del quale era incomparabile conoscitore, ha inteso dimostrare che la più profonda poesia può esistere solo nella FORMA.

    Die Empfindung für das Atmen in der Musik, hört man vor allem im langsamen Satz (deutlich in der Phrase ab 22:00). Furtwängler war ein Meister der Übergänge, d.h. den Verbindungen von Phrasen und Formen. In seiner Auffassung wurde die Musik logisch und greifbar wie eine Plastik und war nicht nur Metrum und Melodie.
