Did you know?

- Malaria kills a child somewhere in the world every 30 seconds. The majority of these children die within 48 hours of the onset of illness.

- Malaria remains one of the worlds leading killers. The majority of its victims are children under five and pregnant women.

- Malaria is caused by a parasite which is transmitted by mosquitoes. An estimated 3 billion people, almost half of the worlds population, live in areas where malaria transmission occurs.

- Up to 500 million people each year are infected with malaria of which about 1 million will diemostly children in Africa.

- Ninety per cent of deaths due to malaria occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where malaria accounts for about one in five of all childhood deaths.

- Sleeping under an insecticide-treated net can reduce overall child mortality by 20 per cent.

- UNICEF is one of the largest buyers of mosquito nets in the world. In 2007, UNICEF purchased and delivered nearly 19 million nets to malaria-endemic countries.

- Today UNICEF distributes long-lasting insecticidal netsmosquito nets treated with insecticide, which can last for 3 to 5 years.
