I've looked all around the net but can't seem to find a solution so I'm hoping someone here might have some insight or have had a similar problem.

I have a line6 spider 100 watt 2x12 combo amp. Bought it when they were first introduced and a couple of months ago it started this problem.

While playing at low volume everything is gravy.. but that's no fun. As soon as I kick up past 3, the amp starts to cut in and out. By cutting in and out, I mean volume not power.

I really just cannot figure out what it is.

Someone help!

Thanks
Jeff

  • I have not personally worked on this amp but do have some experience working with Solid state amps. I would tend to think the output transistors are the fault. These are usually connected to a heat sink. I would also replace the emitter stabilizing resistors as these tend to become stressed when the output transistors become faulty. I don't have a schematic for that amp but that would be my educated guess. If you know somebody that solders you could buy him a couple beers to do it for you

  • if volume cuts out completely, the little black plastic looking things connected to your alluminum heat sink are transistors, and they heat up and turn to shit. i blew one of those up, ditch the spider. buy a peavey 6534... and smash that amp on video for us tubelovers to watch lol... but save the speaker and box, just smash the circuit lol... no take it to a pawn shop and play it quietly for them and walk out with cash.... then buy the peavey... i play carvin, but buy the peavey for metal

  • Did u try with other jacks? Maybe it's your jack that has bad connection.

  • did you get it fixed? I think I know what it is!

  • Faulty output stage transistor or transistors, they need replacing, when it gets louder or the demand is more they cany handle the increase in power output because they are faulty. It will get worse, start crackling, then die altogether but it is repairable

  • i have that problem, and everybody else's problems! when i play it cuts out, turns quiet all of a sudden, it pops, and it just stops playing. sometimes it works, but there's a REALLY loud noticeable hissing sound and then i can only play for like 2min and then it'll stop playing. what the hell to i do?!

  • The problem is that its not a Marshal...

  • I have the same amp and the same thing happened to me. Its the power amp section going bad. I didn't get it fixed but instead I had an old receiver laying around and connected the amp to it through the headphone out put into the receivers aux input. Then I hooked the line 6 speakers to it and it worked. The receiver I used was an old Kenwood KAM-1. If you go that route make sure the receiver can handle the speakers and make sure to set the receivers eq to flat.

  • sounds like a bad connection in the cord or the guitar. I also noticed it looks like you have active pickups that might be it to.

  • the whire`s are wrong conected or the input is too low
