Julie Covington is one of my favorite female singers of all time. I must have stretched to exhaustion my original cassette recording of Evita :)

from wikipedia:

Julie Covington's break came in 1967 when, while still a student at Homerton College, Cambridge, she was invited to sing on David Frost's television show after which she secured a recording contract. She followed this early success with her 1971 Godspell casting at The Roundhouse, then with her 1972 original cast recording of Godspell (Day by Day) and her role as Janet Weiss in The Rocky Horror Show in 1973. Between 1974 and 1984 Covington appeared regularly in the companies of the National Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre, creating such roles as Alice in Plenty, Vivienne Eliot in Tom and Viv (for which she received an Olivier Award nomination) and Edward in the original production of Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine.

In 1976 she appeared with the English National Opera as Anna in The Seven Deadly Sins. Her performance in the 1976 television show Rock Follies led to her landing the title role in the original studio recording of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical Evita.

This had been offered to singer Elkie Brooks, who turned it down. Covington scored an international number one with the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina"; the single reached No.1 in the UK Singles Chart in February 1977. She was later given the opportunity to originate the role in the stage production of "Evita", but she declined, explaining that she thought the impact of her recording would be diminished, and Elaine Paige took the role.

Update: I read the news today (October 25, 2009)
LONDON A spokeswoman for Andrew Lloyd Webber says the composer has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The announcement came in a statement Sunday which said "the condition is in its very early stages. Andrew is now undergoing treatment and expects to be fully back at work before the end of the year."
Lloyd Webber, 61, recently announced plans for a sequel to his phenomenally successful musical "Phantom of the Opera." Called "Love Never Dies," it is scheduled to open in London's West End in March and follow on Broadway in November.
He said the sequel resulted from "unfinished business."
Lloyd Webber's other musical hits have included "Cats," "Jesus Christ Superstar," and "Evita." He was knighted in 1992 and named to Britain's House of Lords in 1997.

!!! Wishes & prayers for his quick recovery. !!!

  • From what I understand, this was the original recording of the musical concept of Evita. I don't think this is the same as the first actual PERFORMING cast. At any rate, it remains my very favorite Evita performance of all.

  • @catkisser, this is from a "project studio recording."

the artists did not perform on stage...

  • could you upload more evita original cast videos? julie covington is such an amazing singer, so is c.t. thank you! :)

  • @crazyapricot,

the whole album will be here in due time.

    65S☺

  • are you sure that this is Colm Wilkinson?

  • CT Wilkinson sang the part of Che, costerluver.

(I'm reading the booklet from the CD right now.)

The booklet says so ---- it is CT Wilkinson....

  • im so grateful to you 65 for uploading this particular recording. it is the best version to date, and julie covington is an absolute knock out with a fabulous supporting cast and the best musical arrangements lloyd webber has ever done. elaine paige and patti lupone may have their place in the history books for their respective career making perfomances, BUT THEY CANT TOUCH MISS COVINGTON. she sings the role like a street fighting whore!!

  • @MsSusanmary sorry you are wrong. I have 2 albums. In 1976 it was the concept album with Colm Wilkinson as Che and Julie Covington as Evita, he is called the White Album. In 1978 the musical in London with David Essex and Elaine Paige, another album was released, it's the london cast. Between the two albums there are differences such as a song of Che in the original 1976 album "The Lady's got potential" disappears in the album of 1978.

  • @amsob77 you are correct -- i have the original cast recording, from the show i saw in London in 1976, in my hand now -

this version is with Julie Covington (the only EVITA) and David Essex (the only CHE)

And this is THIS CD VERSION also dated 1976

    cheers!!

  • @rees276 madonna was not good.... sorry... the only word I can think of for her playing Eva is blasphemous.

Research Eva and her short life and I truly think you would agree....

  • @amsob77 David Essex Che was in 1978 with Elaine Paige playing Evita, this is the concept album from 1976 with Julie Covington and Colm Wilkinson singing Evita singing Che, they were therefore the first to sing the Evita but they have not played on stage

  • Sorry, but I'm sure that this is the version with David Essex singing the Che part.

  • @czahnie Madonna (who WAS very good in the film) copied Julie Covington's style especially when she performed DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA. I had the concept album in the 70s and it is still me favourite. I didn't really like the way Elaine and Patti belted out the songs

  • @catkisser Yep - JC never actually performed the role, a great great loss for us all in my opinion. Anyone know where I can get a copy of this album?

  • Keep checking back to see if you have uploaded more Evita tracks, but sadly still lacking. Hoping you will upload some soon. Love some of your other tracks as well. Many thanks.

  • @catkisser : ah yes, credited as "1976 Studio Cast". Brilliant
