Anyone remember that episode of Family guy where Peter stupidly buys an old Army Tank?If he had half a brain he would have got one of these Mercedes instead which have all the safety things missing from the tank.

@Mcmerc01 I don't doubt that. But I'd consider 1998-2006 to be the dark years. I worked for MB as a mechanic for 12 years and was there through the end of the good cars and at the beginning of the bad ones. When the W210 replaced the W124 E-Class, I knew MB wasn't MB any longer. And today's rule of thumb between us MB techs of days gone by is that a Merc with torx fasteners isn't a true Merc.

@GlassedXKE Their products now, 2010-2011 are a leap above those from 2002-2006. In fact, take a good look and you may find the quality is in fact returning it has been from 2005, but in my opinion back then they lost their image.

OMG, I remember seeing this commercial as a little kid, thanks for the upload! Frighteningly powerful ad indeed!

There's nothing like a W126. Shame that Mercedes has become a shell of its former self today. Notice that in their latest commercials, they're clearly resting on their laurels (by showing LOTS of their previous cars) because they know the garbage they're pumping out today isn't anywhere near the quality of their older models.
The W140, like the W126 before it was broadly regarded as the safest production automobile in world at the time of its manufacture. Diana undermined all of the technology in that car by failing to wear her seatbelt. The safest car in the world can't (and shouldn't) protect its passengers from their own stupidity.
