This series of 7 videos mean a great deal to me; it was on this tour of Roger's that I had the privilige and honour of meeting him, on June 22, 1986, in Seattle, WA.

It is to this day, the single greatest thrill of my entire musical career. :-)

Of course, my story is not unique in the slightest.

It's a tale that I share with all my 12 string compadres; friends here on You Tube, The Byrds Yahoo! group, and musicians all over the world.

I think you'll find Roger in excellent form here; both his singing and playing are excellent.

Notice how he plays "Chestnut Mare" in the key of "C" instead of "D" (To save on the vocals), but still does the bridge in "D7".

Pretty hard to lower that part, and make it sound right. :-)

Enjoy. :-)

  • Yeah,

This is one of Rogers songs. Gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. It's a great story from a great songwriter and guitarist. Saw this played live when the Byrds were a group. I think '68, +/- but the years were kinda hazy then.

  • This is the best! Rodger has endured so much over the years and i have the upmost respect for him! God Bles you Rodger and hope to see ya up here in Baltimore again soon! Peace always~ Dutch

  • Ahh, just tell me a great story, sing me a great song, that's all I need.

  • Written by Roger McGuinn and Jacques Levy in 1969 as part of a musical adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt". In Ibsen's play the hero is chasing a reindeer, but in McGuinn's song it is a horse.

  • Yes, but the guitar is tuned down a half step, it's in B.

    Original was in D.

  • Wow, yes- He does the bridge in D and goes back to the key of C for the rest of the song. He gets away with it just fine! Beautiful song.
