This is Ronnie Barentine (GA Extension from Pulaski Co., GA) in a rye cover crop in Turner Co. GA. Ronnie does a nice job of articulating the benefits of the rye cover crop he also addresses some of the practical aspects of managing rye cover crops.
My question is, do you till in the cover-crop before or after the seeds form?
The concern I have is the cross-contamination of the corn (naturally gluten-free), by the growing of rye as a cover crop or rotation. Our entire family has Celiac Disease. With no cure, the only treatment is life-long, strict, gluten-free diet. We must eliminate all gliadin gluten containing ingredients (wheat, barley, rye and derivatives) and eliminate the risk of cross-contact.
Give Ronnie Barentine a buzz at barentin@uga.edu or 478-783-1171 - he will be able to work through soime of these issues with you. I would suggest not tilling, but rather rolling your cover crop. If you seqarch rollomng cover crops you'll see a few examples.
