Update on protien and supplements I'm taking now. DISCLAIMER: I am not a physician and so this is not by any means a recommendation to anyone but provided only as informational on what my regine currently is:
PROTIEN: A common recommendation of daily protein intake is approximately 1.5 g/kg (2.2 lbs) of IDEAL BODY WEIGHT. My max to shoot for daily is 60gm
- Good Protein sources include eggs, fish, poultry, lean meats, dairy products, nuts, dried beans, peas and soy products
MULTIVITAMIN: 2 per day
B12: 1000 mcg sublingual daily (Must be SL, can be bought OTC, or by injection from your PCP as post surgery you cannot absorb B12 that is swallowed due to decreased hydrocholoric acid and intrinsic factor in our pouches; necessary for iron absorption)
- Good sources of Vitamin B12 include meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and liver.
CALCIUM CITRATE (MUST BE CITRATE NOT CARBONATE): 1200 mg daily with Vit D split into two doses (Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which means it is stored in the body and can be acquired in toxic amounts being hazardous to your health—separate Vitamin D supplementation should not be implemented without the recommendation from your PCP and regular lab evaluations.)
- Good Calcium sources includes milk and dairy products, green leafy vegetables, canned salmon and sardines with bones and tofu
- Good Vitamin D sources include fortified milk, fortified cereals, salmon, fish liver oils and exposure to sunlight
IRON: daily taken with Vit C AND food. ALL patients, but definitely if you are still menstruating. Oral one a day but may require monthly injections if taking orally does not adequately treat anemia. (Please discuss your iron supplement and dose with your PCP before adding iron to your supplement regimen in order to avoid toxicity.) Iron absorption is blocked if taken too close to a consumption of Calcium, Coffee, Tea or many medications and other supplements so best taken with just the Vit C AND always with food.
- Good sources of Iron includes red meats, eggs, dried beans and peas, fortified cereals, dried fruits, and green leafy vegetables
VITAMIN c: 500 mcg per day (facilitates better oral iron uptake/absorption)
- Good sources of Vitamin C includes citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, bell peppers, cabbage, tomatoes
Biotin: 1-2 per day. May help to reduce the amount of hair loss that most bariatric patients experience post-op due to the stress the body has undergone and metabolic changes that occur so rapidly... sort of a body shock.
OMEGA 3's FATTY ACIDS (Fish OIl): 1 per day. Also suggested to help minimize hair loss. Has also been suggested that Omega 3 fatty acids deficiency may lead to short term memory issues post bariatric surgery.
PROBIOTICS: 1 per day Study suggests adding supplementing probiotis can increase by approx 10% total loss of excess body weight as well as increase serum levels of B12 (in study 2.4 billion colonies lactobacillus was taken by participants in addition to eating yogurt)
My Routine:
AM with milk: Multivitamin/mineral supplement; Calcium w/ vit D; Sublingual B12; Biotin; Omega 3; Probiotics
Lunch: Iron; Vitamin C (haven't started yet)
Dinner: Multivitamin/mineral supplement; Calcium w/ vit D

What do Canadians do for Thanksgiving?
Enjoy!
brandyqueenmom 2 years ago
Well it's not as a big a holiday as your Thanksgiving in Nov is for most US citizens. But we do the same thing or many of us do... we try to get home to spend time with family and have a big ol' turkey dinner with all the fixins' and some good ol' pumpking pie. Of course this year my focus will be more on the visiting part than doing my best imitation of the poor stuffed turkey! :o)
