Fever Ray's cover of Peter Gabriel's Mercy Street is certainly a flattering act, but I honestly enjoy the original and Fever's earlier work much better. The production feels a little dull, and the persistent vocal effects ruin the song a bit for me in this instance. It's not offensively bad, but I don't see myself enjoying it past the first couple listens.

But still: Fever Ray, thanks for turning me on to this track. You're the best.

5/10

  • I love this version, and Peter Gabriel's version is one of my favorite songs EVER. I highly recommened. Its gorgeous. It has a soul and heart...I don't know, if you can't hear that....Then I don't know what to tell you.

  • Buddhist prayer flags??? Nice!!! :-)

  • Peter gabriels mercy street invokes deep deep empathy for anne sexton by way of incredible beautifully layered textures - bringing the listener to a meditative state. This version highlights fever ray's signature sounds while paying homage to a masterpiece. Had she have drawn sounds from say 'keep the streets empty for me' using a slower tempo. All in all, agree with the review, despite the fact that you weren't familiar with the original!

  • Wait, you're a guy who goes to the trouble of reviewing music on youtube and otherwise online and you've never bothered listening to Peter Gabriel's 'So'? It's one of the couple hundred albums that any person born in the last 50 years should at least be superficially familiar with, regardless of how close you are to music. And, fwiw, the Fever Ray version is quite nice and changes what needed to be changed for it to fit Karin's aesthetic.

  • @blue9001 And his personal taste is that he doesn't enjoy this song. What is your point? I love this song, but I hate people who think that criticism shouldn't be voiced. Grow up. Art is meant to criticized, thats how people get better at it. Pretty astonishing how many of you are flipping their shit because he didn't like this ONE song. He didn't even tear it apart, he gave a fair and honest critique. It saddens me how immature Fever Ray fans are. Karin is disappointed.
