We thought Wendy (the bird with the yellow face) was a female. Then we saw this behavior for several days, and changed our minds. But later Wendy went back to more female habits, like chewing and burrowing inside paper towel tubes.

We have subsequently learned that when two females live alone, sometimes one will become a surrogate male for mating purposes.

  • @11panos04: Thank you for your comment. No, we never keep the eggs, and as you suggest they are most likely not fertile anyway. You are correct: Poppy and Wendy are both hens; these are are first budgies so we were amazed at the mating behavior. We never thought that budgies could be lesbians ;-) Perhaps it is due to their proximity to San Francisco!

  • The top is probably a male with a different color cere (nose) shit happens

  • My females are showing mate signs at the moment, and the male is just standing by them, yelling at them whenever they kiss. Then when the green one gets "ready" (Lifting butt up) the male tries to jump in, but they kick his ass. ._.

  • hahahahaha =D thats so cute..

  • Scissoring budgies!

  • Awwww gay love gross

  • I can see the same behavior in my parakeets but they haven't lay any eggs and think my parakeets doesn't know that the box nest from wood is a nest and still haven't figure it out because she's been ripping of some newspaper and shredds the paper beautifully but nothing:(
