Don't vilify the guy just because you are ashamed you did not realize he was a man. It is irrelevant who or where he was based. As an activist, he was achieving his goals and your goals. In fact, you supported him because he gave voice where there was silence. Who cares about his identity? It is funny that you do.

Why accuse him of undermining your cause just because you are embarrassed? Why stone him in the village center when you claim to represent tolerance and dialogue.

Who are you to say what is authentic and what is not?
