Matt Bailey, president of Site Logic, uses Star Trek anologies to discuss ecommerce shopper behaviors with Greg Jarboe of SEO-PR. In Star Trek the guys that beamed down with Kirk, got destroyed more then half the time, however the death rate of the red shirts dropped significantly down to 16% when Captain Kirk meets an alien woman in the same episode. So the question Bailey asks is why? Bailey proceeds to correlate the plight of the red shirts to ecommerce. Somebody who comes to your website looking for a digital camera are not going to behave the same way as when they come to your website looking for an mp 3 player, Bailey states. You have to treat shoppers differently, catering to the product they want to buy. Targeting camera shoppers, with camera specific keywords, and looking at their specific online behaviors. To sum it up put you can't just look at what everyone is doing, but rather differentiate based on the specific products they are shopping for.
