What is the meaning of War?

This is a video I made some years ago because of my interest in history and the World Wars. The song Paschendale by Iron Maiden inspired me since I listened to them daily at the time of this videos making. I used some sound effects which I edited and put in this video. Also, the poem is written by Wilfred Owen, an English officer during the war. I wanted to make a video with pictures from the battle to show people the horrors of WWI and war in general.

---

The third major battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele, took place between July and November, 1917. It was one of the major battles of the First World War. For the soldiers who fought at Passchendaele, it was known as the 'Battle of Mud'. Few battles encapsulate World War One better than the Battle of Passchendaele.

Sir Douglas Haig, the British Commander-in-Chief, chose the Ypres salient as the site for his new offensive. He believed this area offered the greatest scope for a breakthrough, and the Royal Navy supported him, hoping that the army could capture the ports on the Belgian coast that the Germans were using as bases for their submarine offensive against Britain's seaborne trade. The offensive began on July 31, 1917, but made disappointingly small gains.

Passchendaele was one of the war's most futile battles. The unspeakable conditions led to terrible losses -- nearly 260,000 Allied casualties, including over 15,000 Canadians killed and wounded. This suffering produced no significant territorial gains, though it did help wear down the German forces. Perhaps more than any other battle, Passchendaele has come to symbolize the horrors of the First World War.

    RIP.

  • The only meaning of war ist that we laern to say NO to it and leran how to solve our problems in peace.

  • Thank you for this video. I have just finished a presentation of the Third Battle of Ypres, and I found the battle just horrible. The british tactics in the confrontation were appalling!

  • passendaele is a city nearby Ieper !

    Your info is wrong

  • 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - lest we forget..

  • very well done video, no one truly understands why wars are faught. The point of the matter is that we have to remember those who put themselves in harms way so their country can still be part of a country and not an empire. This was however a different story for Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India for they were part of the British empire and were thrown into the war.

    Nonetheless: Lest we forget

  • sound effects are great. found myself imagining beng there and wondering what was going to happen to me. Dont think the airplane noises should be there though...not sure they sounded like that in those days. but very good nonetheless.

  • thanks a lot!

  • production... wepons... corporations...money.... training...

man=good for war=money=power=happyness.. are you happy? its not my war... i'm just glad i'm alive :)

  • What is the meaning of war?

    I have no idea?

    Is war necessary?

Probably not, but we're stuck with it.

I still don't see the sense of hell such as this though.
