The Smithtown Veterans Youth Program is an all volunteer effort to help mentor and provide a safe and fun environment for Smithtown's Young Adults during the summer months.
Hosted at the Sunken Meadow State Park Field 3, this popular event complete with rock bands, food, athletics and of course a volcano, is a welcomed break from the negative social situations todays youth are so often are presented with on a daily basis.
Sunken Meadow Beach has a long history of providing a sanctuary for the area's young people. For many decades, before the early 1950's expansion of the State Park, St Johnland's Home for Children had a summer camp on the very spot which now is the home for the Veterans Youth Program.
With the help of local volunteers headed by Kevin OHare, Phil Sciarillo Publisher of the Smithtown Messenger, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Suffolk Countys Finest Suffolk County Police - 4th Precinct, this program has become one of the vital pillars of hope for a very complicated world.
Community is Hope!
Funding is difficult during this period of financial crisis. Hopefully with the help of our elected officials and hard working volunteers we can continue this much needed program during the 2009 summer.
Kevin is NOT and never has been the "president" of the program and is no longer involved in it as well.
Becides for him, this is a wonderful program and it is amazing that is on the beach!
