During EVS 23, the Electric Vehicle Symposium, Matt Kelly of PodTech spoke with Pitt Moos, Product Manager for the Smart EV, a prototype and research electric vehicle being developed by http://www.daimler.com/ Daimler. Currently 100 of them are being built and delivered to consumers in London, England as part of a four year project. The smart for two arrives on North American shores in early 2008, and rumour has it, the EV version will be here not too long after.

  • Hey Everyone! You or I will never drive a Smart EV (maybe our grandchildren) because it is a green PR guilt washing project by Daimler Chrysler that will never be on sale even though it works perfectly and the public loves it because they have a lot of money to lose in a car that

lasts a long time, pays for itself eventually and practicaly doesn't need maintenance. Have a nice future everyone!

  • You might not see it in Portugal, but we already have it in the UK, where the original Smart is very popular.

  • He makes a pretty bold statement here. I guess battery-electric vehicles will never achieve mass adoption since they will always be limited to urban areas. Since your company has placed nearly all its funding on fuel cell applications your credibility can be somewhat reduced. This car is worthless. This car is an embarrassment to the entire electric vehicle community.

  • Not as much of an embarrasement as the GEM and the Reva ;)

  • For as long as Jeremy Clarkson draws breath, yawn

  • Great video. Pitt does a nice job of explaining why an electric version of the SMART car is being created...

  • No kidding! Roll it out already!

  • I'm not sure what you want me to explain, but if it had to do with being ticketed speeding in a NEV... The U.S. Department of Transportation's FMVSS 500 classification for NEVs allow mfg's to forgo installing safety equipment such as air bags & ABS. For this reason, federal law mandates speeds below 35mph. So if a police were to pull you over doing 60mph in a NEV....

  • please explain your comment. Mind you we have combustion engines with over 200hp on the road right now.

  • It is possible. But then law enforcement can pull you over for not adhering to the status quo. Ostensibly, you'll be cited for driving a car that has not passed "saftey standards."

  • how about if they took off the mph govenors and upped the frigging range to 400. mind you both of these have been said are available RIGHT NOW.

all of these ev's are like women giving you a wrong number, you got a number so you're happy but... it's useless.

  • Some NEVs are, most aren't because the market isn't very large. What, gated & senior communities and corporate parking lots.

  • and over priced

  • I am new to this city, but in the last year, I have yet to see a single Th!nk. We have a very large Smart car population here in Victoria though.

  • Oh I understand now! Are there any Th!nks where you reside?
