These videos contrast the 722 and 922 user interfaces. I apologize for the shakycam.

When I got the basic Dish DVR, the VIP 722, I was really disappointed in the user interface (UI). Compared to my previous DVRs (UltimateTV, Tivo, HR20), it was clunky to use, especially when it came to managing my recordings. So I went looking at the 922, but I found it difficult to find its latest UI online. Worse, both Dish and my installer swore that the only differences were hard disk size and the inclusion of channel logos. This is simply not true. The UI is much simpler (yet has more functionality) and makes vastly better use of HD resolution. Skimming and managing recordings is much easier. Only prioritizing timers is actually worse than on the 722.

  • thanks for taking the time to do this, i have been trying to find something

like this. would you PLEASE do a full review of the 922 when you can

  • @MURRAYsaysHI If you're trying to decide between the 722 and 922, IMO there's really no comparison. One made me miserable, and one made me happy. The 922 was well worth the extra $400 I had to pay. And Slingbox (not shown in the YouTube videos) works great! I got rid of my bedroom TV and just sling to my iPad now. Live TV, recordings--it all works on demand.

I'll do a review when I know the box better. A couple of trivial bugs so far I need to work out, still.

  • On the ViP 722 recording schedule, it crosses through the shows that will be skipped because it's not a new episode. I figured that out because it crossed through things I never canceled. But it doesn't affect your recording timers/settings.

  • I can't understand these commenters' bizarre loyalty to the 722. It's a horse and buggy. I used to have it and upgraded to the 922, and it's like I jumped forward 20 years into the future. It's a vastly better user experience if for no other reason than the resolution is so much higher and so many more controls and info are displayed on the screen.

  • You have to click info on the remote :)
