As a response to Real World Green's "Greening Your Kitchen," where Eric showed how to cook pasta in less water, I ran a test of boiling water in a pot with the lid off and with the lid on. Boiling water with the lid on was faster and therefore, uses less energy.
This is actually a common misconception. Adding salt will increase the boiling point of water which has the effect of it taking LONGER to boil the water since it has to reach a higher temperature. What this will do however is that any food you place inside will cook faster since the water is at a higher temperature.

Also, adding about 1/2 a tablespoon of salt to the water will make it boil faster.
