Hardball August 12 2009 ~ Katy Abram of Arlen Spector Town Hall fame was interviewed by Lawrence O'Donnell last night and claimed that this health care initiative woke her up to politics. In fact, she helped to organize the protest before the Spector event and has been hosting Glenn Beckian 9-12 meetings at her home. She joined Meet-Up in December, 2006, with an interest in Conservative and Glenn Beck groups, though since last night she's scrubbed info about her interests from her profile

@madhammudeux Actually, there are many things that could be far FAR better in the states. FOr example the bipartisan nature of government, the government`s opacity, the arguably high degree of plutocratic nature of the US government (What happened to 'a government by of and for the people'?) not to mention a better healthcare system and a reduction of military spending. One problem I see is that the two-party US system does not accurately represent the diverse population.

The soviet union had something to fall into though didn't it? Democracy, free enterprise, freedom of speech etc. All the things that were setting the western world ahead. But America has nothing external to aspire to, nothing for the populace to strive for. I still don't believe a 'collapse' will take place, but rather a protracted period of stagnation, much like that of post Ming Dynasty China.

@madhammudeux I agree with the US naivete. However, I am not sure I agree with the falling bit. The situation has grown quite a bit more dire since last year. It'll fall, probably. Check out Dr. Galtung's predictions on the matter. He accurately predicted the fall of the Soviet Union and also that of the US. Anno 2020, he says. Not that his views are apocalyptic. He thinks it will benefit the US. But also that the US as we know it will no longer be around.
