Essex Mountain Sanatorium

A short video I made back in July 1992 at an old, abandoned asylum located in Verona New Jersey. I shortened up the video, the original version is 20 minutes long. You can really see the main building in it's entirety in this footage. Sadly, the structure has been knocked down for many years now. Dim the lights, sit back, relax and enjoy...

You're right, people confuse this all the time. It used to stand at the Hilltop Reservation, which the entrance is 125 Fairview ave. They are currently in the process of tearing down the west side of fairview ave including cottages, doctors/nurses homes etc, which does NOT include the hospital. Essex County Hospital Center, or known as Overbrook Asylum is in Cedar Grove on Fairview ave. and is slated for demolition, but it's complicated what "everyone wants". Never got to see the EMS.

can someone answer this, why do people keep calling this place an asylum when TB patients came here. Did mentally ill people come here also? I know Overbrook is down the mountain but people confuse these places!! I go to Overbrook everyday to record the process. Such a shame. Great video! Too bad the property is still a mess today!!

Having close ties to Essex County I know what's going on. They are demolishing the west property of Fairview ave in Cedar Grove. It would cost too much to demolish the whole hospital complex. They are currently seeking state funding. It might be a long time before they demolish the huge hospital complex. They are just taking down the firehouse and other useless crap. I have permission to go there a lot from the county admin.

Thanks for pointing this out. I get messages from people/posting saying that this place is still up. I explain it isn't, but I don't think they understand that EMS is torn down, but the Overbrook asylum is still up.

thanks for the memories! this was my favorite place to go...... back before weird nj ruined every possible abandoned building exploration. some things you just keep a secret :)

if i could relive any time in my life, just for one day, it would be taking pictures of all the bed frames jamming up the staircase, looking at the xrays thrown on the floor, appreciating the creepy glow of sunlight through the dirty broken windows... i miss you sanitarium
