One in eight Americans - that is 37 million people - live below the poverty line. We the People travels to Oakland, California, where a lack of opportunities, little investment in education and the legacy of the drug epidemic of the 1980s have created a cycle of poverty.

I am poor enough to be on welfare, but I refuse to be. Those people are living far better than I am, and my life isn't one worthy of pity. Do I envy these people? No, they've given themselves burdens they are having a hard time supporting (kids and other expenses) that I have not brought on myself and i wouldn't want those burdens, but they are not to be pitied either, they are just living by their own choices in life, no one has cheated them out of anything, except maybe the govt.

@Aliothemage I have never been on welfare but I am not quick to assume that I know someone's whole story. I know people who are very good at spotting deals despite being poor, or they know how to refurbish and repair items until they look brand new including fixing cars. This family lives in a poor area OF COURSE THEY will have a bigger apartment but it's in a crime infested high risk part of town. You act like these people are to be envied, instead they are to be pitied.
