My 89 VW Cabriolet just started running stupid this morning. I don't know what is going on. The frequency valve is making no noise at all and it runs like crap below 3000 rpms...

  • I dont recall the relay part number off the top of my head. IIRC it is located on the top of the fusebox (not directly plugged into the fusebox). It will be silver and have 5 identical sized pins. These corresponding pins are numbered on the relay. 85, 86, 87, 87a, and 30. Jumper between 30 and 87 and 87a. this will allow power to be delivered to the frequency valve and it should run better.

    De this and report back.

  • DID you finally figure it out? I own an 87- and it can be a few things not mentioned here. Let me know if your still having this issue.

  • fuel distributer

  • it looks like you're either running CIS or CIS-E, check on the side of your fuel distributor to see if there is an electronic module connected to your coil. it sounds to me like either your timing is off and you have pre-ignition, your plugs are bad or your mixture is off. You can adjust your mixture with a 3mm allen key that slides inbetween your fuel distributor and air fuel plate. You can also check some basics like is your idle stabilizer vavle relay dead?

  • could be anything from bad plugs, bad fuel?

    fuel filter?

maybe it needs a good carb clean....large piece of debris got stuck somewhere in the carb?

Also go to your local mechanic and ask him to do a timing on it. because sometimes the timing can go on those old girls.

check all electrical connections and fuses, thats the easy way to start problem solving. takes a bit of time but its the easiest place to start.

but i really think its the carb
