Coca Cola is one of the world's biggest producers of packaging. There are 584 billion servings of Coke beverages sold each year.

Recently, the industry-leading company has made impressive efforts to reduce their dependency on petroleum oil, as well reduce their carbon footprint. By creating a plastic bottle 20% lighter, they have cut their carbon emissions by the equivalent of taking 21,500 cars off the road each year. Their new can design, which is a mere 5% lighter, is cutting carbon emissions by 78,000 tonnes. These weight reductions subsequently reduce the amount of fuel consumed during transportation. Coke has also recently launched the "plant bottle"; a plastic bottle that uses up to 30% plant content from sugar cane.

In addition to packaging improvements, Coca Cola is looking into energy-saving solutions to further reduce their carbon footprint. They have come up with a sensor for their vending machines that counts the number of people walking by; which allows the refrigeration component to control temperature and conserve energy when no one is around.

Currently, Coca Cola factories recycle over 95% of their manufacturing waste. They have also made large investments in incentive programs such as Recycle Bank and Pay-As-You-Throw to encourage consumers to recycle. Within the next 2-3 years, Coke is hopeful to be a waste-free company.
