The members of the Catholic Church are under Satan's influence. The basic idea here is that Starling represents the Church, and the parts of her body represent it's members. Jame Gumb (Satan's pupil) is, metaphorically speaking, pulling Catherine Martin's strings; but, Catherine represents Clarice -So what is ultimately being depicted is the idea that Gumb is pulling the strings that 'manipulate' the members of the Church. Thus, the members of the Church are under Satan's control or influence. The fact that strings are used to operate the parts of a marionette puppet is merely another metaphor for the same idea. The marionette in the music box is still another metaphor - Clarice is looking in and around the box in an attempt to find 'that which moves her'. Finally, we know from 1 Corinthians in the Bible that the members of the church are like the parts of Jesus' body; but, Starling represents the Trinity, so she also represents Jesus in that she represents God the Son. This idea then takes us back around to the beginning where I said that the parts of her body represent the members of the church. See how it all fits together? :)

Finally, since Lecter represents the historical Israelites, and since the events in Memphis represent the Passover, with the spattering of Boyle's blood on the floor of Lecter's cell intended to protect Gumb from Starling, the angel of death, thus suggesting that Satan's pupil, Gumb, is a first-born son of the Israelites - then ultimately, the idea is that Jews have historically 'manipulated' or influenced the Catholic church (or perhaps the entire Christian church) 'via' Satan.

The above idea is in line with the analysis of 'Manhunter' (Red Dragon), wherein it was discovered that Catholics or Christians believe they are identifying with 'Israel the virgin', whereas in reality they are associating with 'Israel the whore'.

Silence of the Lambs author Thomas Harris has designed things such that it takes a certain amount of 'abstruse' reasoning to figure out what he is saying about Christianity (and Judaism - see the 'part 7' video). The connections (such as those described above) appear tenuous because Harris has made things this way; one reason for his doing so is so that a question can be raised as to whether or not he is really saying these things. This in turn serves to 'distance' Harris from any controversy which may ensue.

  • @Justsomeday You're welcome.

  • @Justsomeday Book author Thomas Harris is generally known to make use of ideas from religion. (The movie-makers are merely following suit.) My videos and blog are an in-depth exploration of religious symbolism, metaphor, and allegory that I believe are contained in the movies. It stands to reason that Harris intentionally put this stuff in his books, though at some level some of it may have also come from his unconscious.
