For my 50th birthday, I took a ride in the Collings Foundation B-24 Liberator, which is similar to the one flown by my Uncle Walt during the war.

The Albuquerque setting was appropriate, because Uncle Walt did much of his B-24 training here at Kirtland AFB.

  • My grandfather was a right wing gunner on a B-24 in the pacific. You're lucky to be able to hear of your uncle's experiences. What I wouldn't give to have met my grandfather. He didn't make it.

  • My uncle would definitely sympathize...he lost his co-pilot on a mission over Hamburg in November 1944....anti-aircraft flak.

  • My father was nose gunner on a B24, 15th AF Italy 1944-45, 464th BG, flew 52 missions, won the DFC & Air Medal for pushing a stuck bomb out of the bay during attack by 7 fighters---got back with 1000 holes in the plane. I flew this B24 some years ago and am more in awe of him and these guys than ever! He saw the first German jets take down 4 B24's at a single pass....He was one of 2 guys (of 10) who got back alive. Can't respect these guys enough---
