Activists from the environmental pressure group Greenpeace protested in Poland yesterday. The activists climbed a coal-fired power plant in Konin demanding the Polish government stop blocking a European Union climate package.
Greenpeace activists scaled a one hundred fifty-meter high chimney at the Patnow coal power plant in Poland. The activists are hoping to pressure Poland into agreeing to a European Union climate pact. Video released by Greenpeace showed participants with banners and a truck blocking the plant's entrance while others climbed up the plant's chimneys. Activists pulled out banners reading "Quit coal" and "Coal - don't burn our future"

[Maciej Muskat, Activist]:
Our climbers are climbing the chimney behind me to demand the change of the energy policy of Poland and to demand from Polish government to stop blocking the EU climate package.

The Greenpeace video shows a police van arriving and police officers arresting activists.
Poland relies heavily on high-carbon coal and has been seeking concessions ahead of a December 11-12 summit of EU leaders in Brussels. At the summit, the EU leaders are expected to agree to details for a plan to cut greenhouse emissions by twenty percent below their 1990 levels by the year 2020. A two-week U.N. climate conference opened in Poznan, Poland, whith 187 attending nations. Developing countries urged rich nations on Tuesday to provide cash quickly to help them cope with global warming and safeguard tropical forests. These nations say they need more financial help to combat warming that could bring more droughts, floods, more powerful cyclones and rising seas.

Yvo de Boer, head of the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat and U.N.'s top climate official, said the meeting had started well. De Boer said that rich nations has to take a lead cutting emissions of greenhouse gases. They are half way through negotiations meant to create a new global treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol on global warming by the end of 2009.
