Notice the previous comment is about fusion nuclear, not fission. There are currently zero fusion reactors in the world, because it is unproven. Your comments relate only to fission.
Seriously, we've been chasing fusion for the last forty years and for the entire time, it has been "within five to ten years". Perhaps one day; and we'll all rejoice. But until then, let's not bank on unproven technology. Reduce consumption. Reduce waste. Embrace life.
Do people in the world not use nuclear energy right now?
Just how large is this "small investment"?
Do you know that one of the reasons nuclear energy is overlooked is because people do not want a reactor near where they live? And that whenever the issue of building new facilities is brought up, that people always fear of another Chernobyl? Especially with the possibility of terrorist attacks against such installations, as they will certainly be tempting targets.
Nuclear fusion is on the very cusp of becoming a viable technology (as in probably this year). With a small investment and maybe 5 years or so of ironing out the engineering issues, it will quickly become the main way the western world generates energy. It's a virtually unlimited source that does not pollute in any way and cannot be weaponized.
There is only one candidate who bothers to keep abreast of this world changing technology.

His name is John McCain.
