Spot on. We still use it in Aikido Schools of Ueshiba headed by Mitsugi Saotome Shihan. The technique in Omote Waza requires a bit of thumb strength and may prove less effective against larger uke. Gokyo works well when there is alot of momentum but not so much from a static position.

Definitely gokyo (at least in Saito/Iwama style) - nage's hand is holding the wrist with the thumb pointing to uke's hand, not his elbow as in ikkyo. However, my sensei told me recently that Saito Shihan stopped using the omote version of gokyo - sometime after '92 obviously. In our school, ikkyo omote from katadori or katatedori looks exactly like nikkyo omote until the pin ... dunno about other schools.
