  • @PotatoGunsRule i think that's no reason. The U995 in Germany isnt in a good constitution, but these round hatches are nearly the main attraction of the ship....esspecially watching confused people trying getting through them is very funny xD whatever,if you want to restore something you have to keep it in its original state! theres not any reason to do anything different, than you just made it look "better". restoring things means something else to me....

  • @Seeadler95 They cut larger openings so people could more easily tour the sub. I feel the same way of course, but most people aren't that fit these days.

  • I saw that submarine when I was a sophomore in high school. I was at that museum in Chicago.

  • I was there in the new bunker at Chicago just a few weeks ago, it is just amazing, unfortunately there are neither videos nor pictures allowed anymore :(

  • This is the old tour when the sub was still outside. After its move inside its new "bunker", the tour starts at the front of the boat. I've probably been inside this sub 20 times in life. My dad worked at the U-boat yard in Hamburg where this sub was built as a welder, helping install the diesel engines.

The hull of the U-505 was gutted after the war and the hull barely survived at its mooring in Portsmouth Navy Yard. When the boat was donated to the Chicago Museum, Admiral Gallery came up with the idea of asking German companies who built U-505 to contribute machinery and instruments to restore the interior. Many did, and gratis. The watertight doors were probably lost long ago and not restored to facilitate access through the boat.

  • Why are all the control signs in English ? on U-534 Birkenhead they are in German ?

  • they let you record video?

  • @formeliandialogue

I read this book some months ago. Pretty sad story though :( Really poor guy man...

  • Why the Hell they destroyed the beautiful round hatches all around there. It's the only existing IX-Submarine in the world and they are destroying the Interior for the "comfort" of the visitors? And then they call themself a museum? The VII Submarine here in Germany is Original state, and that's good.

    although, thank you for uploading.
