Here's a video series that will outline the steps needed to remove and replace the timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley on 2001-06 Hyundai Elantra with the 2.0L Beta II engine.

This may also apply to other Hyundai/ Kia vehicles using this engine.

ALWAYS BE SURE TO PROPERLY SUPPORT YOUR VEHICLE BEFORE GETTING UNDERNEATH IT.

  • I took it to a hyundai dealer for the vibration and they said it needs plugs and wires (no check engine light or misfires) and that the timing belt was too tight. Today I replaced plugs and wires and slightly loosened the timing belt. The engine still sounds loud and it the vibration is still there. Is it possible I damaged other things if the timing belt was too tight for that long? What should I look for? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • @sh3113ycox That's pretty hard to diagnose over the net.

Two things that I would revisit: First is the harmonic balancer, to ensure it is torqued down to spec, and the second thing is the RH engine mount you removed. If those two things check out then I would remove the timing covers, put the engine back on TDC and make sure the cam timing mark is EXACTLY lined up. Even one tooth off will cause the engine to run weird.

  • Great videos. Do you never have to replace the cam seals on these?

Would a 2nd gen (1996–2000) be any different than the 3rd gen?

  • @jbw9999 Not if they aren't leaking. You don't even have to pull the valve cover unless, again, it's leaking, because you don't want oil on the timing belt. The earlier engines should be essentially the same. Thanks for watching!

  • This video is awesome, this has inspired me to do me own belt replacemant. What is the best belt brand to use???

  • @1Catdogman I always use Gates. Glad it helped!

  • Hey thanks so much for the video. Any thought on using rope to tighten the main pulley?

  • I had to help a lady at my wifey's church fix the timing belt on her hyundai, and your video was so helpful. Just wanted to tell you I appreciate you putting this video up. I had it in the garage while working on it step by step. Thanks again.

  • I will check the torque of the harmonic balancer tomorrow. Today when I loosened the belt I had the top timing cover off and put the engine to TDC via the crank shaft pulley marks and the cam lined up perfectly. I took the RH engine mount off to inspect it and it seemed okay, but not sure what I'm looking for if I don't have a new one to compare the height to.

  • Thanks so much for this video! I put a timing belt, water pump, resealed the valve cover on my 05 elantra about 7000 miles ago. Within the last week it seems louder and there are vibrations throughout the vehicle while at idle that get worse with higher RPMs. Recently the radiator tank was leaking which I got resealed and the engine seemed to rock a lot when going from drive to reverse, so I put the front and back motor mounts in (aftermarket parts). cont...

  • Great vids, thanks for sharing.

I've replaced the belt and tensioner/idler on a Tucson a month ago which has the same engine, the trickiest part is to put the proper tension on the belt. Hyundai manuals:apply 2 kg (4 lb)the belt deflects 4~6mm (0.16~0.24) in,This almost 90 degree turn test it's better. Ever since I've replaced the belt I get this noise when the engine is around the 2000 rpm mark, I've isolated the noise coming from the belt or lower idler. Now I suspect it's is too tight.

  • Can you replace the water pump without removing the t-belt?
