For 25 years the multi-faceted comic actor and impressionist Stanley Baxter produced for television a series of spectacular comedy specials reminiscent of Hollywood extravaganzas. His powers of imitation showed no bounds, ranging from famous film and television personalities to the Pope and the Queen and attracting both controversy and huge audiences. The Glasgow-born Baxter began his career on stage with a variety of impressions in a routine co-devised by his mother. During his army service he entertained the troops and then obtained employment at the Citizen's Theatre, Glasgow. He made his television debut on the BBC's Shop Window in 1952, followed by guest appearances on variety shows. His major television break came with the satirical sketch show On the Bright Side (BBC, 1959), co-hosting with Betty Marsden, for which he was awarded the BAFTA for Light Entertainment Performance. The Stanley Baxter Show (1963-71) cemented his reputation and catapulted him to television stardom. Baxter, his producer David Bell and writer Kenneth Hoare then moved to commercial television. For LWT, they produced the classic Stanley Baxter Picture Show (1972-75), packed with lavish costumes and sets. Baxter's one man tour-de-force performances became must-see television, winning him a BAFTA for Best Light Entertainment Performance. The series was also awarded the BAFTA for Best Light Entertainment Programme two years running in 1973 and 1974. NOTES SOURCE: www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/541148 /
Here's an incredibly clever sketch sending up UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS - and you'll have to remind yourself that Baxter plays every single role!

His Christmas 2008 show is proof that he's not lost his touch. One of his new sketches was of the Queen visiting Belfast, stopping to talk to him dressed as a 60 year old woman passer-by. He spends five minutes telling Her Majesty how 'I don't have the words' and 'I'm so tongue-tied' until, bored, she moves on, still leaving him talking! Wonderful irony! He, of course, plays both parts to perfection and the Belfast accent is pretty good too! The BBC should post it on YouTube.
I've been trying to find a video of him impersonating Noel Coward performing the song 'Why can't we cancel Christmas' I know it's out of season but I'm after the lyrics etc. He runs through all the worst bits of Christmas (having to put up with relatives you really don't get on with etc)
Oh God this man is a bloody genius. The writing was sensational and the production values were the best you could get. I used to wait and wait for the next Stanley Baxter special to arrive and was never ever dissapointed. One of the greatest performer's this country has. A truly GREAT artiste!!!!
