There were Nine Riders at the water's edge below, and Frodo's spirit quailed ... Suddenly the foremost Rider spurred his horse forward. It checked at the water and reared up. With a great effort Frodo sat upright and brandished his sword.
"Go back!" he cried. "Go back to the Land of Mordor, and follow me no more! ' ....
The elf-horse reared and snorted. The foremost of the black horses had almost set foot upon the shore.

At that moment there came a roaring and a rushing: a noise of loud waters rolling many stones. Dimly Frodo saw the river below him rise, and down along its course there came a plumed cavalry of waves. White flames seemed to Frodo to flicker on their crests and he half fancied that he saw amid the water white riders upon white horses with frothing manes. The three Riders that were still in the midst of the Ford were overwhelmed: they disappeared, buried suddenly under angry foam. Those that were behind drew back in dismay.

Arwen's Elvish words: "Nîn o Chithaeglir, lasto beth daer, Rimmo nîn Bruinen, dan in Ulair!" (Waters of the Misty Mountains, listen to the great word, flow waters of Loudwater, against the Ringwraiths!)
Thanks to NocturneViolin for providing the Elvish words and the translation.

  • The common tongue translation of the spell/invocation is, "Waters of the Misty Mountains, listen to my plea... Flow the waters of Breunin against the Ring-Wraiths!"

  • @ryan33bttm Beautiful words, thanks for posting them!

  • @ZutaMacka666 You know, female hater, that with so few elves in Middle-Earth, many of the Elven warriors that you saw on the field of battle could have been she-elves. In many cultures in the ancient world (like ancient Ireland), the women fought right along side of the men in REALITY not fiction. Why don't you crack open a history book sometime and LEARN something instead of running your stupid-ass mouth.

  • @DragonTycoon Because the water is pure, and they are not.

  • And yeah, in the books Frodo didn't just lay around being carried around by some Elf, he FOUGHT it!

Oh and... the Nazgul weren't outran by an untrained woman (note: NOT a woman warrior, just a girl who spends time reading bopoks), but by the captain of Elrond's guard, GLorfindel!

  • Tolkien didn't use Arwen, because she had no importance. Elrond used one of the 3 rings to raise the river; the story really loses all meaning if some elven wench can beat the carp out of Sauron's most powerful servants on her own. I mean, why didn't they send 3 girls over and be done with Mordor!?

  • @vasdesade Hell to the yes...I'm as gay as Adam Levine yelling at Blake Shelton!

  • @ryan33bttm Gay much?

  • It sounds like the Black Rider says "Give a path, she elf" not "Give up the halfling, she elf"...anyone?

  • @DragonTycoon Because the river Bruinen is elvish domain and it's controlled by Elrond. Tolkien never explains why they're afraid of water in general though.

  • running down the river will not help you...

  • If you want him come and claim him,so HOT!!!!!
