"No Kickin' Ass Without Tanker Gas" By Lt Col Nutnfancy, USAF

I'm nearing the end of my 20 yr Air Force career as an air mobility pilot. It is with a measure of sadness I leave my beloved KC-135R Stratotanker. I have flown most KC-135 models and it has always come through for me and the mission, even in some tough deployed areas with both air and ground threats. If you can fly the tanker well, you can fly any other heavy platform well too...seen that play out hundreds of times. Every major force projection of the US has tanker support as its backbone and no bombs are dropped, no ordnance is laid down, no cargo or personnel are delivered without it. Many deployments, much time in the desert, and months away from the families are some of the prices paid by its crews and support folks. The tanker mission, like many in our militaries, is only made possible by the sacrifices of many dedicated and talented individuals. In the USCG i was on a HH 65 dolphin. When we needed gas we just went to an airport. It was way easier than that. lol

@srvvlhm if a tanker goes down many planes go without timely refueling. that means missions are either diverted or scrubbed. hell yeah they need eyes in the skies. also, the tanker can refuel the sawc. this allows the eyes to stay airborne for a much longer time. it saves on manpower, end item wear and tear and crew rotation. besides, as a polcat, i loved it when the tankers wouldnt skip the pits and just park it. it wold take at least 3 r-11s to fill one tanker. mega r-11s to fill planes,
