Wachet Auf (Sleepers Awake) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
J.S.Bach composed a wide variety of music during his lifetime, including hundreds of Cantatas. Cantatas were written for specific Sundays of the Lutheran ecclesiastical calendar, almost all of them based on biblical material. Bachs Cantatas form the core of his incredible body of work, and the Cantata 140, featuring Wachet Auf in its final chorale, is considered to be the finest of them all. Bach weaves an independent contrapuntal melody into the chorale tune, the cantus firmus. The chorale itself was written in the 1500s and is based on the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25: 1-13).
