I think what he's saying is that what we call "history" isn't necessarily a reconstruction of the past but something that belongs to a present "community" or a collective identity and history is their interpretation of the past, both imagined and real.
Please state your point clearly. I had tough time followinbg what you were trying to address or bring across. Are you sayinng that the past and the present are inter-connected that one can not be eliminated to understand the other? I'm sorry please!!!
