Mexico's economy yet to rescue its poor

Despite a tough economic climate, Mexico was been weathering the storm thanks to a free trade agreement with the United States that gives it access to the world's largest consumer market.

But brisk trade aside, reforms needed to ensure sustained growth - particularly in the labour and energy sectors - will be put on hold ahead of a presidential election in 2012.

There is hope the next president will continue with policies that will grow the economy and rescue nearly half of the country's population that still lives in poverty.

Al Jazeera's Frank Contreras reports from Mexico City.

Thanks be to God I am a knowledgeable person. Majored in computer science at Notre dam and Im curious about knowing the Truth in all. My father is from Indianapolis and my mother from the state of Sonora in Mexico. I feel and am 100% American. I have native blood and colonial blood in me, I want the best for my country and for my southern friends and allies. And NO! OK, not in the EXACT sense of the word. But, latin derived languages from the PIGS countries are the latino people I speak of. They often share many caracteristics: non efficient, corrupt and all drama and politics (in family and other matters). They are very regionalistic themselves, one province hates another. Mexico IS NO LATINO! Mexicans are a nation with a HUGE culture, history and identity. That is why Mexico is so corrupt now, thanks to latino influence.
