Liszt composed his two Franciscan Legends in 1863. The first of the two evokes Liszt's 'patron saint', St Francis of Assisi talking to birds. Kempff selected his Liszt repertoire wisely and this piece seems especially tailored to the pianist's strengths. Kempff made this recording in 1975 when he was 80.

  • Try to speak to some, however respected birds ... it will turn difficult. They, the birds, may apparently listen to you, but also may not notify you higher ... We should have "soul" to speak to them, without our less meaningful words ... and this noise-voice pollution.

  • Sublime.

  • what about Francis walking on water?
