In July 1980, Richard Burton appeared on the Dick Cavett Show. Here, a clip of him discussing the glories of mining in Wales -- in the miners' eyes. It is, improbably, one of the most beautiful monologues on the dignity of labor ever recorded.

Burton's comments about the miners loving their work is borne out by the Chilean miners who were rescued from the cave-in last year. Many of them professed their love for mining and expressed a desire to get back to the mines as soon as possible.

Magnificent voice of great theatrical star and lesser movie star [only because of his choice in vehicles], as was liz except she became completely entranced by all the the star propaganda towards the end.

Burton was indeed a great actor...anyone who says aught is a fool. But like many really talented people who became huge celebrities he took on too many bad scripts and fell into self parody. He was also, as, this clip shows much smarter than the average actor. Look who he upturns all the cliches about the working class thrown at him.
