this interview seems to be held before his documentary on (his own) manic depression...

He needs to be still and be with the thoughts and feelings that produce the idea he wants "not to be". He will never be free, until he stops telling himself the story that he needs to kill himself. His unconscious tries to serve him, and the message to his servant is " Life is too much for me, but I
don't like what I have to do to get out of it, so I'll put up with the misery until death comes for me". Steven believes what his thoughts tell him about the reality of his life.

I love this man, but he reminds me a lot of Quentin Crisp and Oscar Wilde. There's an awful lot of self loathing masked by an extremely agile mind capable of extraordinary rationalisation. But it's a somewhat romanticised rationalisation and perhaps it's that which keeps him going while at the same time keeping him where is. I admire his openess in talking about it all, though. "Good on you, Stephen!"
