I fell in love with Romeo Cascarino's Bassoon Sonata in 1967, and it has been in my mind and my heart ever since. When Captain B'shucks of the Galactic Group squadron based on Proxima Centauri offered a steerage compartment of his Interstellar Freighter, The Sheineh Punim, as a sound studio, and Frank Kitus proposed transposing the piece for prepared toy piano and theremin with the background sounds of the Oort Cloud (gravitational and electromagnetic interactions being translated into sound waves, of course, by a straightforward algorithm), naturally, I jumped at the chance.

  • My bassoon teacher, Sol Schoenbach (1915-1999), inspired Cascarino to write this Sonata. I'm glad you played it on the theremin. Thanks.

  • Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing that! Every time I play Mr. Cascarino's piece, I hear thrilling new things in it--the little passing harmonies or subtly designed dissonances--so full of heart and life!
