The Birds-Mouth joint on our German Barn Rafters is shaped by Tim using our Makita 16" Circular Saw. A very difficult cut with a 35 pound saw.

You know, if you cut down, the weight of the saw will help you out and your cuts will be more accurate.

It's much easier to cut down, so you're working with the weight of the saw instead of against it.
Timber framers do these drop cuts all the time.
