Spirit Bears are the offspring of Black Bears with double recessive genes so they are cream coloured. They are found only in the Great Bear Rain Forest about 300 miles to the north of Vancouver in British Columbia on the west coast of Canada. They are NOT Polar Bears

This video shows a Spirit Bear coming across a shallow stream to be 10 feet in front of us. This gave us a great photographic opportunity but also a nervous reaction!!!!

  • Yes you are correct that the local people guard the main and other isstes where these lovely bears are. In BC they in the Hartley Bay area and protected by the Git Gat First Nation tribe who are terrific people and I have been priviledged to meet, dance and eat with them

  • Hi cunninghamwendell - well I don't wish to dissillusion you but as far as I have been able to check out, Spirit Bears have not been previously recorded as being as far south as Oregon so I would suggest that you contact either your local wildlife conservation people or email the Great Bear Rainforest up in British Columbia - see their web site for address etc. Sorry but have to ask you if it wasn't an albino bear you saw that was white?? Please do keep me advised about this.....Dennis

  • Sorry you feel like that but humans too near bears of any type are in danger and that includes these Kermode Bears which is why the guides we have had when looking for bears of many types have always kept us a distance away. On this occasion even our guide was concerned when the bear started crossing the stream. May I suggest that if you think these cuddly bears are safe to be with that you go up there and get into their personal space but I am NOT recommending you to do that...Oldiehuck

  • the narrator said this was filmed in december 2007.... but the video was posted in october.... TIME TRAVEL?!?!?!

  • @yakchirscarlson - Hi there - Thanks for your viewing of my video but sorry to tell you that you have misheard my British accent - I said September 2007. Have another listen. Keep smiling and hope you enjoy some of the other wildlife videos I have put here.........Dennis

  • why would u give away their location. There on the verge of extinction. Remove the location from the video and info.

  • Hey Rocklover - I only gave their location because they are so tightly protected by wildlife "gardians". There are also one or two other nearby sites but the sightings were not that good there as they were where we were. And you can only get there with permission. Rest peaceful

Thanx to everybody for their comments.....................Oldiehuck

  • then they ge mauled after this and the footage was found in a bear

  • Spirit bears are at the coast of Alaska. One of the authors wrote a book "Touching Spirit Bear" and he saw one of the bears still even if you try to ask him where the bears are he will never tell you. Learned that from my language arts teacher Mrs. Rothgeb.

  • this video should have "with a spirit" playing in the backround...

  • I live in Oregon. Last spring on the Northeast side of Mt. Hood I thought I saw a sheep ahead ,. WE WERE AMAZED !! NO !!! it was not a sheep! we saw as soon as it stood up that it was a snow white bear. IT WAS A SPIRIT BEAR !! We are so blessed. I have searched... no..... feared running into a bear in the Oregon woods. My life will never be the same. 45 years looking for a bear ... I've seen one A SPIRIT BEAR!!!

  • Nice film, and looks like a great day. I was surprised though, to hear you even consider that the bear crossing the stream may be interested in eating humans. That comment sounds like what I would expect from someone with irrational fears of wildlife. Sad that it made it to this, otherwise enlightened, post. Still, thank you for sharing the film .

  • @RainForestTreks

Con't and start doing things like walking up to men with guns, justifying those men using those guns.

Since Timothy Treadwell's death we've been able to link the death of 9 bear that he interacted with to his actions eg. feeding the bear made them dependant on him causing them to hibernation starve or approach people looking for food leading to their deaths. I'm loath to see this happen with any other bear population but I won't be surprised when it does to the Kermodes.

  • @RainForestTreks

Con't "Treadwell Fallout" as one of my contemporaries calls the current study that I'm engaged in: Make up a name for an area (Bear Maze, Bear Rainforest) put out unscientifically supported "facts" about the ursi population (poachers, rarity) to get people to support your cause, or vacations in Treadwell's case, and what you get is too many people flooding an area with good intentions forcing the bear to interact with humans. The bear become comfortable and familiar with us
