A mic shootout that will help you get an idea of how a mic can affect the sound of the bass drum.
The MD441 was distorting in a few hits but I left it as it gave another aspect of a dynamic mic out of the drum. I guess a few inches away it would be able to handle the pressure .

  • not gonna lie these all sound pretty bad. either that or you need to position them better / EQ them

  • @Theshamham Hey . well its in purpose that no eq or compression where applied - positioning better is always a good thing :)

everything recorded flat . no mastering either.

  • Are you sure that the equation audio mic is called the DM-104? or is it the MTD-104? Cause I cant find the model for DM-104 at all.. but I found the MTD-104

  • @azombiestool You are right! weird that no one noticed that b4 thank you I will soon wright that in the annotations

  • Need to also add in here the Audio D6, Sennheiser e602 and Sennheiser e902 since those are actual bass drum microphones. Out of those presented, the Neumann was by far the best, but also have to consider that it's shock mounted and positioned to capture more of the reso head (getting tone and attack) whereas the dynamic mics used were put in the hole thus capturing more attack and much less tone.

  • @simmsdn Its a good comment - Hopefully Ill make new videos with other mics and positioning . Thanks .

  • Audix d6 is the winner

  • Is that a 24" Kick?

    Bill

  • the re-27 sounded best to my ears.

  • hey thanks for this post, very interesting. Keep em coming

  • @jcw3032 you do need the speaker. (like the yamaha version). the speaker cone serves as the diaphragm and captures the super low frequencies. sub kicks are best used in conjunction with other mics on the kick if you have the means. even just like a sm57 to capture the attack and such.

  • the best is EA DM 104

  • Where is the beta 52?

  • is that subkick you made just an empty wooden speaker box (without the speaker in it) and just a mic put in the middle of it? Cos i would wanna do something like that myself!

  • Jamming the mic in the port hole like that always sounds like crap.Note that the neumann is the only mic positioned away from the bass drum giving it some room to breath(and obviously sounds the best).I attribute it's superior sound to placement as much as the fact that it's a great mic.You could always stick a mic much closer to the flapper as well to pick up more attack(use two mics).

  • I agree. Neumann was by far the best (may have to roll off the top end since it's picking up more snare)). Of course, one has to consider the price... One could also ask for a Heil PR40 and the 48. And how about a Mojave 201Fet? Some would use a TLM 103 if we're going to try 'non-traditional' drum mics here too. But thanks for posting
