Making-of- / Behind-the-scenes video of a photoshoot with a couple in the near of Hanover (Germany). I used my Nikon D3 with the Elinchrom Quadra and partially with the Lastolite EzyBox Hotshoe.

I hope you'll understand my clumsy english and enjoy it. If you have questions feel free to ask...

  • When measuring ambient do you measure the sky? Also you mixed the ambient with the flash? Does that mean you used a exposure of that ambient and adjusted the lights power accordingly?

  • @disruptfam Yes. First take a photo in Aperture Priority with the wanted Aperture-Settings. Now assign the measured settings of the result to Manual Mode. Hint: Most cameras have an indicator in the viewfinder for the automatic measure results while focussing even in M (no need to take a photo). Just think in different layers of light (for-, middle-, background). If you like a dramatical effect just underexpose the ambient light, if you like to mix it with the flash then use a longer exposure.

  • Sorry, I realised your name is Stefan after I posted. My bad.

  • @Solarfactor No problem ;-) I'm using an old Tamrac Pro12 for carrying the Quadra with two Heads and additional accu, three cables, the Adaptor for the Elinchrom System and the diffusors for Elinchrom Beaty dishes. Fits perfect! I have used the Tamrac for my photo equipment before but fast it growed like your's and so I'm now put my photo gear in the Tamrac Expedition 8. Hope that helped you!

  • After testing the ambient light, did you have to set the flash output manually or did the Pocket Wizard do it automatically? In other words, was it TTL or manual?

    Thanks. Wonderful teaching tool!

  • @1mysteryman TTL is only available with system flashes from Nikon or Canon. Unfortunately you have to use the Quadra and all other studio strobes in manual mode. This is the reason why I first decided how much surrounding light should be in the photo (camera was in M(anual) mode) and then add the Quadra. The good thing about the Quadra is, that Elinchrom delivers a remote with it. So you can change the intensity of the Quadra right from the hot shoe of your camera. Regards - Stefan

  • did you do this with just one strobe?

  • @simonsenphoto Thank you for answering, Stefan. That does help. A lot. I'll probably be in the market soon for a bag. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks again. :)

  • Great video, Simon. Can you tell me what bag you are using to carry the Quadra and your photographic gear? I bought a small LowPro bag last year but outgrew it in a matter of months.

  • Is that Mark Zuckerburg? :P
