Renowned environmental journalist Andrew Nikiforuk breaks down the tar sands operations in northern Alberta, Canada in this video. Based on his new book, Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent, this concise presentation explains how this "unconventional oil" - the majority of which is exported to America - is ruining forests, wiping out woodland habitat and draining our water systems. Not to mention wreaking havoc on economic systems and energy policy. Read more about the book at http://www.dmpibooks.com/book/9781553...

Big Business has all the controls and Government regulates thier needs and this make for local decision makers a cayous structure. This is mega project is on Cree, Dene and Slavey Terrritory, to name a few Indigenous Nations effected by this project on a daily basis. Industrial Generating Companies need to regulated by the people most effected by their endless greed for control.
trihood- Dr. O'Connor could not have reported 6 rare cancers, b/c he didn't diagnose them, he just "suspected". After authorities hounded him for years and investigated him his files contained "mistruths, inaccuracies, and unconfirmed information". He lied, saying a man died from colon cancer- it never happened! In addition- Former chief George Poitras is an "anti-oilsands activist"- not a reliable source. Too bad all the misinformation in this story is not exciting enough to be corrected
trihood- Considering that more non-Indians hunt and harvest more moose/fish than aboriginals, one would have to see a direct correlation between those hunters' health, and the moose/fish they have consumed. Do they have "excessive" rates of cancer? It would be obvious if this was so. Also, do U.S. rates mercury in fish for consumption account for naturally occuring levels in that habitat? No
trihood- UPRIVER of the oilsands, there are naturally occuring levels of mercury and arsenic in the riverbed. Alberta fishing guides produced by the province have said this for many years. Also, why would you conclude that all of the water they they estimate leaving the tailings ponds goes directly into the river? If it did, it would be visibly noticeable, and there would be outrageously high levels of chemicals. You've been duped. It undoubtably descends to subterranean levels. (gravity)
trihood- It is NOT true that most Indians live off a steady diet of moose and fish from the river/lake. They actually drink treated water, from a water treatment plant and have a grocery store in Ft. MacKay and Ft.Chip. Wow! No one, except dumb people drink directly out of the river/lake. Who wants to get diarrhoea from all those naturally occuring micro-organisms? And who would actually want to wait until all the silt settles to the bottom of a glass?
trihood- Some clarification need to be made. You wrote a paper. Nice. New information has come forth refuting your old info. Read Nov.11 National Post- "MD Misled on Cancer Rates, Report Finds". There are no excessive rates of cancer. The doctor(an easterner who is a propoganda tool now for radical environmental causes) made "inaccurate statements", the College of Physicians and Surgeons concluded. What souces are you quoting that say there are excessive blood cancer rates?
