How to train a cat to operate a light switch.
In this video Zimba is clicker trained to operate a light switch. The clicker has previously been established as a conditioned reinforcer for operant behaviour and Zimba has earlier experience with this type of training with a clicker. The training consisted of short approximately 5 min sessions over a period of 3 days. All the training was videotaped. The total training time to get the results you see at the end of the video was 28 minutes and 34 seconds.
In the beginning any approach to the switch results in a click followed by food.
After approaching the switch is established contact with the switch is required for a click. Pawing the switch is preferred

The next step would be to move the lightswitch around until the cat is pressing it where-ever it is, and then gradually moving it up onto the wall until he is pressing it there, too. Eventually you move the fake one next to the real one and reward the cat for pressing either, and then eventually remove the fake one completely. Voila, lightswitching cat.
what is that clicking sound? is it suppose to immitate the sound of a lightswitch or? awesome work btw. i trained my cat to sit and high five on commands. theyre smarter than oyu would think.
the clicking noise was made by a tool called a clicker (original name, right?) the sound tells the cat that he has done something good. when he hears the clicker he gets food. clickers are more often used with dog training though. X3
With cats it's always a question of who's training who ; ) For anyone interested in the subject, cat-lover Paul Brough has written a great little ebook, which will give you more than a whisker of knowledge. Well, it made me purr anyway. (paws for this link): wingsofgabriel . com /eBookStore/cats/
