Growing the spuds would be okay if the jerk treated her tolerantly. She is utterly right to walk away feeling betrayed, from any power-tripping control narcissist who is emotionally cruel enough to call her room dirty. Authoritarian help destroys everything it touches. He's evil, he helps to cause her death, and when she is lying in the ditch she knows the world is not worth anyone having and he sums up how. He may encapsulate how the counterculture failed, he certainly shows how it goes wrong.

I loved this film and saw it when it first came out and it has haunted me ever since. Thanks for posting it...

I have also watched when I was a teen and loved it.
after years I found it on video and watched again, my feelings where the same, Agnes Varda is an eccellent, honest and truthful director and her characters are expressing her qualities.

One of my favorites. So beautiful and so perfect. When I was 16 I saw it for the first time and I wrote to this guy I was involved with about how Mona was the woman I had always longed to be. Ending the letter with how I wanted to die in a ditch. He wrote back saying there were better things in store for me. He's somewhere out east now and I'm not so sure about my desire to be Mona. I probably would have grown the potatoes.
