According to California Attorney General Jerry Brown, the median income from the travel site was about $39 a year and YTB Travel members pay about $50 a month for the website. They also have to pay an initial investment to get started.
A much more lucrative part of the business has been convincing others to open up an online travel agent business with YTB Travel. The more people members signed up, the more they made. Brown called YTB Travel a gigantic pyramid scheme. The California Attorney General sued YTB Travel Network for $25 million on behalf of those who said they were scam victims in California.
Many of the scam victims at the bottom of the YTB Travel Network pyramid paid $49.95 each month for replicated travel booking websites that are all exactly the same and for their efforts they earned an average of about $40 a year in travel agent commissions from YTB Travel.
YTB travel agents have complained that they were misled about how much money they would make and often made less than what it cost them to join, according to a consumer fraud lawsuit Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed Thursday against YTB. The lawsuit seeks fines of $50,000 for every consumer fraud violation the court finds.
