  • Thank you so very much for sharing this video. I used to listen to this with my grandma as a child and very fond memories. This is my favourite song and i have spent ages looking for this. I used to sing it to my children when they were babies

Again thank you for sharing and there is no better time to find it than now. God bless you

  • I like her hat.

And harp music is just right for this tune.

Just a backup to a previous reply.

Simple Gifts by Joseph Brackett(Maine 1848)

Copland discovered the tune in the Library of Congrees(1944) and used it in Appalachian Spring, a ballet for Martha Graham.

Lord of the Dance,Sydney Carter 1963

  • I too remember Mary O'Hara from a young age and remember when my grandmother Shannon used to tell me stories about the fairies. Thank you for a beautiful memory.

  • Lovely harpistism

  • very nice

  • my absolute favorite hymn

  • She has a lovely angelic voice :)

  • Simple Gifts was the original version of this tune -- by a member of a Shaker community -- Joseph Brackett. Aaron Copeland used it in Appalachian Spring, and then Sydney Carter wrote the "Lord of the Dance" lyrics in 1963.

I grew up going to an Episcopalian church and Carter's lyrics were in our hymnal -- as a young dancer it was one of the few moments that church actually connected.

  • Lovely, lilting version of this classic song. Such a virtuoso, Mary O'Hara!

Say, is it just me, or does the tune sound like that of "Simple Gifts"? If one is based on the other, "The Lord of the Dance" must have come first.

    Thank you, Padraig1935.
