Crowded House is a rock group formed in Melbourne, Australia and led by New Zealand musician and singer-songwriter Neil Finn. Finn is widely recognised as the primary songwriter and creative direction of the band, having led it through several incarnations, drawing members from New Zealand (himself, Tim Finn and Eddie Rayner), Australia (Paul Hester, Nick Seymour, Peter Jones and Craig Hooper) and the United States (Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod).

Though the band owes its original success to the Australian live music scene, references to New Zealand people and places in songs pay homage to their roots ("Kare Kare" is written about Karekare Beach, "Mean to Me" refers to Finn's hometown of Te Awamutu). The success of the group's third album Woodface and the general success of Crowded House and Split Enz prompted the Queen in June 1993 to bestow the Order of the British Empire on both Tim and Neil Finn for their contribution to the music of New Zealand.

Originally active between 1984 and 1996, the band's notable hits from this period include "Don't Dream It's Over", "Something So Strong", "Better Be Home Soon", "Fall at Your Feet" and "Weather with You". In 2007, the group reunited with a new drummer. In this period, the group has released one album, Time on Earth, which reached #1 on Australia's ARIA Albums Chart.

  • God can't stand Satan because of how good he looks. I love this song, there is so much truth in it.

  • @Bennyboy1985

I don't understand, could you please explain? I'm sorry, I am 14 years old, and I don't know much about this yet.

  • Neil Finn is an amazing poet. His lyrics are incredible linguistic marvels that others just stumble around over.

  • Brilliant Lyrics:

"...and he can't stand Beelzebub, cause he looks so good in black."

    Another Crowded House gem.

  • Neil is one of the best lyricists ever. Witty song, lovely melody. A true songsmith. Bravo Mr. Finn!

  • @Asmodera Awesome observation! Never realized that

  • @teacherlady66 That is exactly why I love him so much. Too many songs today have generic lyrics. Neil's lyrics force you to listen and to think. We need more artists like him.

  • @SelmanAndyyy175 It's a metaphor, but it's also a parody of traditional biblical views of God, and the contradictions/conflicts found in any relationships - going to the extreme - kind-of like saying "Oh s*** I don't know! But there goes God..." In other words "I don't know, and the whole 'God' thing makes no sense either!'" And being a brilliant lyric, there will be more meanings and ways to interpret it than this - this is just one.

  • @Asmodera Lol!

  • @123jsbach

Point is there but it's hidden ;) Sausage dog backwards sounds like god Jesus.

  • @Kainlarsen mmmm! Tasty! ;)

  • @123jsbach But great at barbequeues!:D

  • But why would god choose to go walking a sausage dog? pointless beasts!

  • Woodface is a great album, one of those great early 90s 'polished hippy' albums (think Out of Time or Pocketful of Kryptonite too) that defined their band. There is a subtle mystery and honest poignancy to it where it never bluntly hits you over the head with it. It's has a relaxed, sophisticated, quirky beauty to it that maybe speaks of a New Zealand attitude. There goes god, with its interesting idea and that beautiful harmonica is a highlight.
